Don’t Be Shortsighted
By Kevin Roth
“We can’t wait 4 weeks for her to start. If she can’t make that work, we’re going to need to keep looking.”
– Do you have any backup candidates that you could make an offer to right away?
“No we’ll need to start over and move quickly.”
GIVE HER THE 4 WEEKS!
Don’t overplay your hand as a hiring manager in this situation.
We know you want someone to start ASAP and it bruises the ego a bit to give a candidate this sort of concession. But unfortunately in this situation, you just don’t have the leverage to play the “it’s the principle” card.
You were lucky enough to find someone great who the whole team wants to hire. Don’t blow it over semantics. Odds are you’re going to shoot wayyyyy past that 4 week timeline trying to find someone better.
